Tokens and billing
Studio uses two separate pools of tokens:
- Build tokens: Studio builds, iterations and image generation.
- AI tokens: Compass planning, plus runtime AI inside your published apps.
You can see both balances on your Dashboard (shown as Build and AI on your plan card), and in full on the Subscriptions page.

Image generation draws from your Build tokens (it sits alongside the other build actions above), even though the picture itself is AI-made.
What a token is. Tokens are how you spend on Hamish, and there are two kinds, each with its own balance shown at the bottom of your sidebar.
- AI tokens pay for thinking: confirming a Compass plan (8 for Essential, 20 for Complete), and the AI features that run inside your published apps.
- Build tokens pay for building: everything Studio does to your app. A first build costs 5, a simple change costs 1, a bigger change costs 2, a chat message that does not change your app is free, and each image a step generates costs 2 more at build time.
- Talking to Compass is free, and your confirmation covers the whole planning session, including any re-planning inside it.
- A build plan charges per step as it runs, not all up front. If a step fails, that step's tokens are automatically refunded.
- You always know the price before you spend. Every plan step shows its cost up front, and nothing is charged until you act.
- Your monthly allowance is spent before your top-ups, so your top-ups last as long as possible. Top-up packs are available on paid plans and stay available for as long as your subscription is active.
Refills:
- Free plan: your allowance is a one-off grant to try Hamish; it does not refresh.
- Paid plans: both pools refresh each month on your billing date.
- Top-ups (paid plans) carry over month to month while your subscription is active.
